Panic! at the Disco (P!ATD) was originally a pop rock band from Las Vegas, Nevada but is now is the solo project of Brendon Urie. Originally formed in 2004 by Urie, Ryan Ross, Spencer Smith, and Brent Wilson, the band became a solo project for Urie when its final member, Spence Smith, left in 2015.
In 2005, P!ATD released their debut album A Fever You Can’t Sweat Out. Gaining fast success with the song “I Write Sins Not Tragedies”, the album went platinum in the US in 2006 and was upgraded to double platinum in 2015. Bassist Brent Wilson was fired in 2006 after a world tour and eventually replaced by Jon Walker. The band released their second album, Pretty. Odd. in 2008, with the single “Nine in the Afternoon”. That album is widely known for having a significantly different sound than the band’s debut. Ross and Walker eventually split with the band, who favored the band’s new direction, because Urie and Smith wanted to make further changes to the band’s style. Ross and Walker went on to form a new band, the Young Veins, leaving Urie and Smith as the sole remaining members of Panic! at the Disco.
In 2013, Panic! later added bassist Dallon Weekes (now of I Don’t Know How But They Found Me) and released the band’s fourth studio album, Too Weird to Live, Too Rare to Die!. Before the release of the album, Smith left the band unofficially due to health and drug-related issues. In 2015, Smith officially left Panic! after not performing live with them in 2 years. Shortly after, Weekes reverted back to being a touring member of the band making Panic! At The Disco an official solo project of Urie.
Panic! has been nominated for 3 Grammys, but never locked down a win. They released their seventh studio album, Viva Las Vengeance, on August 19, 2022.
On January 24, 2023, Brendon Urie took to social media to announce the end of Panic! at the Disco saying:
“I am going to bring this chapter of my life to an end and put my focus and energy on my family, and with that Panic! At The Disco will be no more.”
Fun Fact: Brendon Urie plays 8 different musical instruments.
