Taking Back Sunday was originally formed in Long Island, NY in 1999 by guitarist Eddie Reyes and bassist Jesse Lacey. Currently, the band includes Adam Lazzara (lead vocals), John Nolan (lead guitar, keyboards, vocals), Shaun Cooper (bass guitar), and Mark O’Connell (drums).
Lacey left the band and formed the critically acclaimed rock band Brand New in 2000. The rumor about his departure involves John Nolan, Lacey’s then-girlfriend, a house party, and an alleged hookup. After Lacey’s departure, Adam Lazzara joined TBS. He played bass but eventually switched to lead vocals by the time they recorded their debut album, Tell All Your Friends.
Taking Back Sunday is considered one of the founding fathers of emo, sparking the huge popularity of the genre.
Fun Fact: Singer Adam Lazzara is known for his high-energy microphone-swinging during live shows. Not only has he knocked his tooth out while swinging the mic, but he also knocked himself out with it.
Fun Fact 2: Their name comes from a B-Side song by The Smiths.
