American indie pop band Young Rising Sons recently stopped by The Fuse Studio 104 for an exclusive acoustic performance and interview. The band, consisting of Andy Tongren (lead singer/guitar), Julian Dimagiba (bass), Max Iantorno (guitar), and Steve Patrick (drums), shared stories about their formation, memorable performances, and plans for the future. You can watch the full interview below.
The band’s story began with Steve and Julian initially being in separate bands during their formative years. “Julian and I had, like, a rival band when we were growing up, basically.” The two eventually joined forces when their respective drummers left, and they decided to play together. Andy was discovered as their lead singer by Steve and Julian at an open mic event. Steve recalled, “We were looking for a singer and Andy was playing like a open mic thing, acoustic, and we were like ‘That guy rocks, we should work with him.’ And then, I don’t know, we started playing Call of Duty together, and we’re like, ‘This guy’s our best friend.’”
One of the band’s most significant highs was performing at the Firefly Music Festival. Andy described the experience: “We opened the festival and it had been raining for days, and it was just like a mud pit. So we weren’t really anticipating there to be a lot of people there and we walked out on stage to like 20,000 people. And it was just, like, it’s truly nothing like it.”
Following a hiatus, Young Rising Sons came back together in 2020, finding new inspiration during the pandemic. “Um, I think there were multiple factors. I think one of the biggest things was covid, honestly,” Andy explained. “And one of the reasons we took a pause in the first place was to let some of the legal dust settle from our previous label, um partnership. But, I don’t know, our thing has always been about finding the silver lining in the good, and in the, sort of, not so great situations. In the mundane parts of life. And covid really kind of forced us to do that, and we started writing songs that felt like Young Rising Sons-songs again because of that, I think. And we’re like, ‘Yeah, I think this is what we need to be doing.’”
Looking ahead, the band is excited about their ongoing tour, upcoming music, and finishing up an album.
Formed in 2010, Young Rising Sons debut single “High” gained significant attention, being named a “Next Hype” track by BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe in 2014. The band has also toured with prominent artists like Halsey, Weezer, and The 1975. In March 2022, they self-released their first full-length album, Still Point In A Turning World.
