The trailer for the last season of The Umbrella Academy was released, and it is set to My Chemical Romance’s “The End,” a fitting choice given the trailer’s focus on this being the end of the world for the Hargreeves siblings yet again.
In case you didn’t know, Gerard Way, the lead singer of My Chemical Romance, is the original writer of The Umbrella Academy comics. Per NME, back in 2020, when Way was on the Dark Horse All-Stars panel at virtual Comic-Con, he shared that he “had this long history with comics, and kind of making my own and getting published at 15 and using my grandmother’s typewriter. But then I went to the School of Visual Arts in New York City, and my major was cartooning. So I had all these comic book classes, and in my senior year I interned at DC – I interned there for like a year.”
Despite his success with the band, Way never lost his passion for comics. “Then the band gets bigger and more successful, but the whole time I miss this other part of my life that I had to kinda walk away from. I really missed comics, and I had always loved them.”
The use of “The End” is the first time a MCR song has been included in the show, although Gerard Way’s solo songs have been on the soundtrack before, according to Polygon. This final season sees the Hargreeves siblings facing yet another big challenge: preventing the end of the world one last time. The trailer hints at a twist where Ben (played by Justin H. Min) accidentally ends the world, and the siblings must work together to solve the mystery of his death in order to save everyone.
Per Alternative Press, Way has a new comic series, Paranoid Gardens, on the way. He announced it earlier this year and the first issue is set to come out later this month.
The last season of The Umbrella Academy starts on August 8.
